Original black and white vintage photo from Greenland in 1955 of a so-called Peter Snow Miller machine that was used to dig trenches in the ice sheet during the Cold War, when Thule Air Base / Pituffik / Thulebasen was built and the Americans set about building Camp Century - an entire city under the ice sheet, as part of the top-secret project "Project Iceworm", which the Danish government did not even know about. Project Iceworm was about constructing a huge network of railway tunnels under the ice sheet that would house more than 600 nuclear missiles.Text on the back of the photo: "A Peter Snowmiller machine makes a second pass in cutting a trench through the snow, during the construction of subsurface structures n the Greenland Arctic Ice Cap. This machine operated by Army Engineer personnel is capable of cutting a four -foot trench as deep as 18 feet if winds are favorable. 1955."
