Biography:
Jeppe Hagedorn-Olsen (1929–2011) was a Danish ceramist and painter, known for his work with ceramics as a sculptural medium since the 1950s.
He was born in Copenhagen and was the son of the painter Thorvald Hagedorn-Olsen. After apprenticing with the ceramist Haakon Darger in Frederikssund (1951–53), he continued his education at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen under Peder Hald (1953–56) and furthered his studies at the ceramics school in Faenza, Italy, in 1956.
Hagedorn-Olsen’s early works included tall, massive, cylindrical forms and rustic, geometric dishes and bowls, often featuring organic figures growing from their bases. In the 1970s and 1980s, he created glazed reliefs with a white-gray glaze background, featuring darker stripes and animal- or plant-like forms in high relief.
He made his debut at Charlottenborg in 1956 and exhibited both in Denmark and internationally, including in Japan, the USA, and Saudi Arabia. His works earned several awards, including the Ballardini Prize in Faenza and an honorary diploma in Vallauris, France.
Jeppe Hagedorn-Olsen passed away in 2011, and his ashes were scattered at sea.
