Kaare Klint
Kaare Klint played a central role in the development of Danish furniture design and furniture architecture in the 20th century. Through his work as a furniture designer, architect and teacher at the Furniture School at the Royal Academy, he established a systematic approach to furniture design based on function, proportions, material knowledge and craftsmanship. This approach became fundamental for the development of classic Danish furniture and later the Danish furniture industry.
Kaare Klint as a teacher at the Furniture School
At the Furniture School, Kaare Klint worked closely with his students. The teaching was characterised by dialogue and joint analysis of a furniture’s function, measurements and proportions. Many pieces were developed in collaboration between Klint and the students, which helped shape an entire generation of Danish furniture architects.
One example is the Mix easy chair, designed in collaboration with Edvard Kindt-Larsen.
Importance for Danish furniture design
The work of Kaare Klint, the teaching at the Furniture School, the cabinetmaking tradition and the Cabinetmakers’ Exhibitions together form the foundation of Danish furniture design. The focus on function, proportions, materials and craftsmanship was carried forward by later designers and created the basis for the international recognition of Danish design in the mid-20th century.
This period marks the transition from individually crafted cabinetmaker furniture to more systematic design principles, which could later be adapted to industrial production and broader use.
