Antique, European hand-carved wall hanging / spoon rack of a pelican feeding its young. It represents a symbol of Jesus Christ's sacrifice and love for humanity. The symbol originates from an ancient legend which presumed that the pelican would wound itself to feed its chicks with its own blood if no other food was available.
The symbolism of the pelican has deep roots in medieval Christian art and literature. The pelican was often depicted in church art, such as altarpieces, manuscripts, and mosaics, as a metaphor for Christ's nurturing love.
The image of the pelican was also used in liturgical contexts and could be found, for example, in frescoes or decorations. Its significance as a symbol of sacrifice made it a powerful and poignant symbol within the Christian tradition.
