Steret Kelsey Ballet girl 23 Royal bronze from Royal Copenhagen no 438 af 500 Wooden stand 7 x 13 cmSterett-Gittings Kelsey was born in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1941, and was graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a B.F.A. in Sculpture in 1964. She is a remarkable American Sculptor who primarily works in bronze. Her beautiful fluid figures have been shown in the United States and Europe and proudly owned by both private collectors and museums. Her work is represented in museums all over the world, including the National Art Museum of Sport in Indianapolis and the Hakone Open-Air Museum in Tokyo, and she has also worked on a number of large decorative projects. Kelsey is the leading sculptor of Dance in the world today and she has proclaimed: "To capture the Essence of Dance in Bronze has become a purpose in my life.” Sterett-Gittings Kelsey has frequently been compared to Degas in that, like him, she has an amazing feeling for human anatomy and is able to create life, whether working in bronze or porcelain. In 1975 Royal Copenhagen invited Sterret Kelsey to come and work with them. She designed several porcelain figurines and the first bronze figurine collection in the 200 years of Royal Copenhagen: First a series of 6 dancers, followed by several sport and gymnastic sculptures on marble stands. All issued in a limited edition.
