Biography :
Karl Hansen Reistrup (1863–1929) was a Danish sculptor, ceramicist, and designer, known for his work with Kähler in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and also worked in Germany and Italy before joining the Kähler workshop in Næstved in 1888.
At Kähler, Reistrup was the leading artistic figure behind the company’s breakthrough in art ceramics. He designed vases, figurines, and reliefs in the popular historicist and symbolist styles of the time, often decorated with animals, mythological motifs, or scenes from Nordic history. His collaboration with Kähler helped bring international recognition to the brand.
Reistrup also contributed to large-scale public works, including reliefs and monuments, and was one of the first Danish artists to successfully merge fine art and functional ceramics in a modern context.
