Rare royal cup, Aarhus 1967. Denmark. Royal Copenhagen cream cup, curved with gold (frame 1235), No. 1870 with saucer. 2nd grading. Made in Copenhagen in 1966.
The cup has the Aarhus City Coat of Arms and the initials: M - H on the side in gold.
The cup originates from an event at Aarhus City Hall, where Crown Prince and Princess Magrethe and Henrik were visiting, after having already been married on June 10, 1967 in Copenhagen. They visited Aarhus on a summer cruise on the ship Dannebrog and were officially introduced. The Crown Prince and Princess were with King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid. The event was on August 15, 1967. The day's program was secret, so we don't really know what happened. However, sources say that it was the first time Prince Henrik visited the city. The Crown Prince and Princess officially took over Marselisborg Castle in Aarhus in 1967 as a gift from Magrethe's father, King Frederik IX.
It is not known for sure how many cups the Municipality of Aarhus has had made for the event. But the cups must have been ordered well in advance of the event. Why the municipality ordered the second batch remains unclear.
Provenance: This cup comes from a Captain in the military, where it was displayed in a display case in Åbyhøj, Aarhus. They lived in Aarhus until the end of the 1960s.
